a change lock on a steel door
I was putting change lock on a steel front door for a apartment . I couldn/ t get the screws to catch , I used sheet metal screws and the screws that came with the set. I drill a pilet hole then I try the screws , the sheet metal screw just seem to made the hole bigger and didn/t catch. The only screw that work was a self tapping srew . I though the sheet metal and the self-tapping threads is the same some one said try dry wall.. I can't under stand why sheet matal didn't catch and why they just made the pilet hole larger. I got one more to put in ilike try not to used self-tapping pad-head screw if I can

Not sure what a "change" lock is......perhaps a "chain"? At any rate, the screws that come with most residential locks are for wood doors, and even when screws look like they might be "self-tapping" they're usually too soft for hollow-metal doors. It's not uncommon to substitute better quality screws when dealing with metal doors.
