The latch portion remains inside

The lock portion works fine, but the latch portion no longer responds to the handle, remaining inside the lock mechanism. It can be teased out but appears loose and slides back in, leaving the door unlatched.

Time to replace the latch. They are usually available / sold seperately.

Thanks. With Andersen, that probably means the whole lock mechanism box. Some it.

I am addicted to fixing things and if you are also afflicted sometimes the handle mechanism loosens and doesn't properly line up with the latch.
Yours could be very well be worn out but it might be worth a look to see if it can be adjusted and/or cleaned up.
WD-40 is a very good cleaner for such things as it will mostly evaporate after applying.
Flush generously and likely lots of dirt and grime will be removed.
