Many bedroom doors don't even have locksets, only non-locking passage sets. I suppose a non-keyed lockset like the one pictured might give someone a minor sense of privacy but they can usually be opened easily from outside for safety reasons.
That's why the different names: Passage sets allow free passage; Privacy sets lock but may be unlocked/bypassed with a generic device (stiff wire, small screwdriver, coin, etc); a Bathroom set was just a Privacy set with a split finish (inside/outside); ...
I talked many a frantic mama through opening a bedroom or bathroom door when little Betty/Bobby had locked themselves inside.
I also saw multiple deadbolts on bedroom doors. I was also implored to add deadbolts to 1 3/8" hollow core doors; to me, an almost futile action.
Passage and privacy knobs usually come with installation options for the latches, either a rounded latch plate, square latch plate, or the round drive in adapter. Should all be explained in your instructions.
Yes, read instructions...(if you even get instructions at that price), I think the way they do it nowadays is that you select either the flat latch plate (most common) or the "Drive-In" adaptor (the "round thingy", less common) and fit one or the other onto the latch before installing. I think the "drive-in" latches are increasingly be used in manufactured housing, but AFAIK, the regular 2-1/4" x 1" latch faceplates are still used in site-built homes.
Please help. I'm a DIY newbie. So this will be my first time replacing deadbolts and doorknobs, and I want to make sure I get the right size.
I've attached pics. Thanks in advance.
