Question Handlesets

When shopping for entry handlesets, what things should I be looking for in doing comparisons? Are there any websites that will compare handlesets?

There are a number of things to look for. I assume you are talking about a decorative handleset for the front door. The unit should be solid brass, not brass plated. Newer units now come with a lifetime finish preventing them from tarnishing. The deadbolt should be a grade 1 deadbolt, contain a 1" bolt and have a heavy duty strike that has 3" screws that will connect to the framing beyond the door jamb.

There are several varieties of handlesets, interconnected, (The deadbolt and latch will release simultaneously, or sectional, meaning the two are independent of each other.

Your better companies now offer lifetime mechanical and finish warranties. Schlage, Kwikset, Baldwin.

Just remember, you get what you pay for.

As a sidenote, if you intend to install yourself, check the clarity of the installation instructions.
