Question Repair roof Eves/overhangs

I would like some help on how to repair or replace the eves (the end tails of the roof rafters that stickout of the roof) I have some dry rot on a few of them. I herd that you can cut them off (about 2 inches) and then nail a board all the way across and then attach the gutter to the new board. Is that all it takes? and any help on how to hang/attach the new board would be great.

Your eaves will be framed by rafter tails extending beyond the walls of the house, and consist of the soffit (underneath) and fascia (face boards nailed to the ends of the rafter tails).
You need to remove the rotted parts to see what you need to do to repair them.
If it is just the fascia boards, you can just remove and replace them. I highly recommend going back with pressure-treated wood and galvanized nails.
If the end of the rafter tails are rotted also, I wouldn't just cut them off because they won't match the rest of your home.
You can sister another rafter tail beside them to the old one (after you cut the rotted part off) by screwing a piece on cut to match the length of the old ones.
If the rot extends back into the roof sheathing, you will need to remove shingles and replace the plywood sheathing, also.
Good Luck!

Thanks for the reply

I guess I am speaking about the rafter tails(I am a computer guy). My tails support about one foot of the roof and shingels(just the over hang. I want to replace or repair the tails. So all i ahve to do is cut them past th rot and attache a new end peice or cut them all off and go with a board all the way across like a 2x6 or something.

Thanks agian.

if your gonna repair the whole deal this is how you should do it

rent a nail gun

1. tear off the facia(leave the soffit board if possible. should be cause the facia is usually nailed to soffit. figure out what your rafter is (2x6, 2x8 etc) get a short chunk of said stock(2x6 etc) and find a rafter in good shape. push chunk up to roof sheathing(making sure no roof nails interfere) then transfer plumb cut (where the facia is nailed)from a good rafter to chunk of said stock. cut chunk on transfered line from existing rafter and label "pattern". now use this pattern to cut "sister raftertails" give yourself as much length on these as possible towards ridge for a good solid nailing to existing rafter.
