The house is quad level house, and where the roof of the lower level butt up to the side of the upper level (which vinyl siding). On heavy rains\high wind blowing rains it leaks into attic of the lower level. The roof was replaced about 4 or 5 years ago(before I brought the house). But from looks of it the vinyl "j" channel was installed on top of the shingles, so I thinking when the roof was replace they didnt get the new single far enough under the vinyl siding? I guess the only way to fix this is to remove the vinyl siding, repair\replace\install flashing that would slip under the singles and turn up against the wall and maybe put some tar on top the flashing. Then but the vinyl siding back. Or does someone have another option for me to try. I had plan on replacing the vinyl siding(about 15 years old and has gaps in the "j" channel, but not this soon. Also there is suppost to be new vinyl siding out that has insulation made into it, does anyone know if help much, or worth the price difference. Sorry for the long post.
Thanks

roof leaks
Is hard when you cant see the job so I dont know if im right or not here.If this roof slopes down along this wall we make a small shingle of galv metal out of a 5"x7" and bend them 2" up with 3" over.now you slip one of them under each shingleas you work up. make sure that the top or next one over laps the bottom one some. now the 3" side is the one that goes under the shingle. The 2 " side is the part that goes to the wall. you can put a nail in each one if you want into the wall not the roof. Then if you do put new siding on you run it over that 2" part of the metal shingle on the wall. If the roof goes the other way we use a 6"x6"X8' and slide it up under the siding dope the top of the shingles and nail the front edge down onto the shingles. hope this helps

Ed,
thanks, you pretty much on the money with the layout(roof slants left & right down the wall /\ -roof). I have a brake (not sure it spell that way). Any reason why I couldnt make the piece longer as length ways, as long as they still over lap going up. I just found a tool to help remove vinyl siding in middle of a wall so I can remove just the bottom part to make repair.
Thanks

You can make the so called step shingles about any size you want as long as they can slip up under the roof shingles. Some are now going to a 6" up and 6" out about 10" long. just try it. Now be sure and start this metal shingle at the bottom of the A.If you take some of the siding off and put the metal step shingles in and just put one nail in each in the wall. Then put the siding back over them on the wall. Keep the siding up off of the roof about 1". You see it dont have to come down tight. This way the wall and roof can move but any water will just shed down shingle to shingle Good luck
