shingles

Hello,
My son has GAF architectural shingles. Does anyone know if the plastic strip across the tar srtip on the shingle has to be removed bfore installing the shingles? Thanks,

No. You do not have to remove the strip. The only reason that the tape is there is to keep the shingles from sticking together in the bundles.

Additional comment:

I am assuming that the "release tape" that you are referring to is on the BACK of the shingle. This tape does NOT need to be removed for the reasons stated in my earlier reply.

However, I have seen in the past when this release tape on the back, accidentally comes off and sticks to the sealant dabs (tar) on the TOP of the shingle. If this tape has come off the back and is now sticking to the sealant on the top (it will be loose), it will need to be removed or the shingles will not seal on the roof. This will be very tedious work and is considered a defect to the manufacturer. Send it back.
This is rare, but I thought I'd throw it out there anyway.

If the material is good, you should never have to remove any tape from this type of shingle.
