Gable Dormers

I live in a Cape Cod in which the roof framing consists of 2 x 6s, 16" OC and am contemplating adding two gable dormers. I recognize that I would have to double up the 2 x 6s on each side of the dormers; my question- can this be done without having to remove all the roofing substrate all the way up to the ridge to get the additional 2 x 6s in? Is there any way to remove the soffit and facia boards and slide the 2 x 6s (pre-measured and cut) on their sides up to the ridge and then flip them in place and then nail?

Thanks,
Mark

Sounds like you have a creative solution! You should be able to get them in there without too much trouble. Keep in mind also that you do not have to have rafter tails on these new rafters and that will cut the length down a bit. Just make sure you have the H.A.P. (height above plate) set correctly to match preexisting rafters and you have good bearing at the seat cut.
