How much for a new roof?

Is there a general formula that I can use to calculate the cost of a new roof? I know how large my roof is, but do not know how much contractors generally charge. (ie. dollars per square foot). I live in Virginia. BTW, the roof is rater steep and I can not do this job.

Roof Charge

Ask your ins. company, they would know the going rate in your area. Way out here in central U.S. we get $40 per sq. to tear off one layer, $40 to install one layer and $40 for the shingles. A steep charge can be from $25 to $40 per sq. depending on the conditions. Also, number of valleys, chimneys, vents etc can increase the cost.

A good rule of thumb is $80.00 a square (100 sq ft) if there is only one layer of tearoff. If more then one layer, add $25.00 a square for each layer. If roof jacks are required add $25.00 a square. This does not include any materials, or any redecking that is needed. Hope this helps.
