Smile Is staples not allowed?

I am a typical do it yourselfer and decided to build my own home, I picked up a roofing gun and a roofing staple gun and some shingles....now someone has informed me that staples are illegal and I need to use nails.

I'm totally confused and have looked all over and found numerous building codes however they differ...some say staples and other say no staples.

I live in Hawaii and think it would make a difference pertaining to building codes. If anyone has the answer and or link I would be most greatful and may even fax a ticket to Hawaii 8-)

.....and if you know what the deal is against staples that would help my decision also.

THANKS,

The staple issue comes from the manufacturer. Look on the back of your shingle package. It will tell you on the warranety if staples are allowed or not. In area of high winds, many building codes say nails only. So look on your package, then check your building code. These will tell you how it really is. Good Luck
