Is there a special tool available for the removal of slate roofing?

Up here in the north country we do not have very many slate roofs,
so I have not had the experience that I should have had. However,
there is a special shovel with notches on the end and a pry bracket
on the back, that is available. It is designed to get under the
shingles and pry up the nails. This should work with the slate,
also. The big problem is if you are trying to save the slate
shingles, then you may have to use a different tool and a little
more tender loving care.

If you look around you may find someone who will take it off for you and take the slate as payment. Old slate is in demand in some areas for rehab of historical buildings and add ons to existing buildings. Some people buy it for painting pictures on. Use safety measures if you plan to get on the roof, one step on a slate with the nails rusted thru and its seeeeeeeeeya.

There is a flat bar tool that has a 2 hooks
on each side of it that hook around the nail,
and there is a hande piece that sticks up that you hit with a hammer, which cuts the nails, so you can pull the slate out intact.
