Question

Has anyone had any experience with putting new trusses over an existing roof with a low pitch? We are considering doing this. Our existing roof has a very low pitch and we would like to update to the look of our house with a steeper pitch, but we wonder if it is possible to avoid removing the exisiting roof? Our exisiting roof has no eaves and we would add those at the same time. We live in the cold Midwest!

It would best to completely remove the shingles as a minimum. They are the greatest weight on the roof.

You can cut back the roof decking to expose the top plates of the walls and build a new roof from there.

I've done this very thing to the home in which I live. Went from a 1:12 to a 5:12 and you can hardly tell.

Where in the midwest do you live? Close enough to throw the business my way?

Oops! Forgot to mention that trusses would not be necessary. You can accomplish this with rafters and ridge. You could even redesign your roof to include hip and valley.

Just some additional afterthoughts.

Question

I posted this same question in the Architecture and codes forum. I have the same problem. You are saying that you do not need trusses just added rafters attached to the outside wall structure?

I live in the Los Angeles area of California with a roof pitch of 2.5:12 want to go to at least 4.5:12.

Thanx

Jerry

Yes, that is what "I" said. Since you live in earthquake ridden So.
Cal. your local codes probably dictate sometime different.

If it were here in Missouri, and I were doing the job, I would not
remove the trusses or even the old rafters if I did not absolutely have
to. I would merely "cut" you a new roof.

I do not know if your local codes would allow this to be a DIY project.
I do know that you will need a building permit and inspection. Contact
the code enforcement folks in LA City or County and ask.
