Thumbs up

I am about to build a patio room. I would like to have a 3/12 pitched roof that I could attach to my existing 3/12 roof on my house. The "run" is 12 feet out from the side of my house. How do I go about tearing into my existing roof and "tying in" the new porch roof? My main concern is getting the rafters attached properly. It will be fairly easy to attach the joists, I think. Any ideas?

Before you extend a 3/12 roof out 12 feet, think about what the height of the new roof will be. Will you have enough head clearance for it to be 3 feet lower than it is now? I'm not talking about at the house, I'm talking about what you will have at 12 feet from the house! The patio rooms we install usuall have (and are designed for) a pitch of 3/8" to 1" per foot.

Given the dilemma that Lefty has addressed, why not consider going with a gable? You will have an 8'wall rather than a 5'!!!

Drainage will only be as bad as your current 3:12 and it will look a lot nicer.

You will need to study up on valley framing and rafters/trusses.

Visit my website on advice on how to do these. Go to the "Catalog of Services/DIY help" section
