My neighbor, selleing her house, has three shingles missing and wants me to replace them for her. Is there a right way to accomplish this and sneak a shingle under the upper courses? How do you nail it in under the upper shingle, etc.?? Thanks for any ideas.....

I use a putty knife to gently pry the upper shingles up and the put in the new shingle and nail it. It is better to do this on a warm day when the shingles are pliable.

If it is too warm the shingles will rip apart. The stickdown strip is soft and gooey on warmer days. Cooler days allow you to separate shingles easier.

The best weather I've found for shingling is 50's and sunny.

I use a wonder bar for separating shingles. You can pull the old nails if necessary.

Make sure the old nails are pulled or beat down. If not, there will be bulges.

You'll have to lft shingle possibly two courses up from where you are working to accomplish this task.
