Is there any refrence that shows you how to calculate the loads on a roof. I am planning on adding an addtion to the back of my house
but I am not sure how to go about building the roof of the new addition.

When you go get your building permit for this addition, they will tell you what snow (or 'live') load you have to meet. They will also tell you whether you can build it with joists and rafters, or whether you have to use engineered trusses. Personally, I would use the trusses, even if they aren't required. Faster and cheaper, and stronger!!

They will also tell you what size lumber to use. They will also inspect it at different phases, and if you do not do what they say, they will probably fine you, and make you tear it out and correct the faults. Good Luck
