The existing decking is in poor condition with many imperfections. I want to replace the 3/8" plywood with 5/8" and want to know how much of the old deck I can take up and replace at one time, or can the whole roof deck be taken off and redecked?

As a rule, you usually replace as you tear off. Probably take off 2 or 3 sheets, and then replace with new. That way you have something to walk on.

How steep is the roof? Do you plan on using plyclips?

If the roof isn't too steep and you do plan on using plyclips, I would recommend tearing it all off and starting at the bottom. It would be easier to put the clips in this way.

Have you thought about applying 1/2" CDX over your existing decking? You don't need to wory about plyclips if you do.
