Some of the fascia boards behind the gutters is rotten and needs replacement. What are appropriate lumbers to use? Also, should it be primed and painted before it is installed, or after? This is an 80 year old house.

If you are not going to cover it with anything else (like a vinyl or aluminum fascia) then I sometimes would recommend treated lumber for fascia. Yellow pine is my second recommendation.

I would normally prime the wood before installing it. The paint would go on after it is in place. Use hot dipped galvanized fasteners.

Able, if you can't find the yellow pine that MTAC mentioned, use redwood. Like Carpenter said, prime it, install it, then paint it.
