Please tell me what a valley is? I know this is a dumb question, but I really need to know.

No question is stupid. A valley is where two portions of a roof join, on a downward slope. Water runs down a valley. The other term is ridge, which is the top line of a roof, or an addition.

Just think of the "V" in valley as you look up at a roof.

Another term that Jack overlooked is "hip." It is similar to a ridge in appearance, but it goes diagonally up where a ridge runs parallel to the ground.
