I have a raised ranch style house that has a long continuous roofline in the front. It's 80' with the screened porch. I want to add a covered porch over the front entrance with a gable facing the street to break up the roof line. What pitch should I use to get a nice look from the road? The porch will be 12' to 16' wide and will tie into the 5:12 roof. What pitfalls should I be looking at from the start?

The pitch of the new porch roof can be anything over 4:12 and look fine. For aesthetics I would recommend that the new ridge tie in to the house at the same height of the existing ridge. This would mean either that you "might" have a steeper than 4:12 pitch on the porch or that the porch may be wider or narrower than you plan.

If the porch is as wide as your home is deep then the pitch will be the same 5:12 as your house.

It's a function of geometry.
