Shingle Laying 101

I am building a small workshop with a plain gable roof and have never laid shingles before (plain 3 tab kind). Can anyone give me some pointers? It seems pretty straightforward until I get to the roof ridge. How do I cover that? My house ridge looks like they laid one on top of another sideways, but if you do that, doesn't water run underneath each shingle into the ridge? Do I need to caulk between each?

Thanks in advance.

Cool

Wrap a layer strip of roofing felt over the ridge overlapping the new shingle layers on each side of the ridge.
Cut a 3-tab into the 3 equal parts, and use them as ridge shingles over that roofing felt strip. You will have to use spots of roofing tar on the last shingle on the end to cover and seal the roofing tack heads in it.
Good Luck!

Worthwhile link

I've been researching shingles for a roof repair I'm planning. You might take a look at this link as it seems to be more detailed than most I've found.
