Question Gutter replacement

I have old, leaking gutters and I need to replace them, so I have a couple of questions:

1. Do the "Leaf Guard" type gutters really work and are they worth the money?
A friend got a quote on his house for about $1500 to do them and our houses seem about the same as far as roof line, length of gutters, etc. That seems expensive to me. I've got a basic roofline with a single dormer in the front. One story.

2. How hard is it for me to install regular gutters myself? Is that a beginner, intermediate, or advanced task?

Anything else you think I should know would be appreciated.

Gutter guards run about 6 dollars and up, installed. For the do-it-youselfer, I have taken notice to a plasic one that Home Depot carries for 3.29 for a 3 foot length. It has a curved edge that resembles the patented aluminum expensive ones. It allows the water to flow around a curved edge, while throwing debris away from the perferated holes. The aluminum and plasic flat screens alway get clogged, sag, and usually fail within a couple of years.
