Question Shake roof

Will be doing some patchwork on the in-law's wood shake roof. It's in rough shape with missing shingles, etc. Shingles are soft and crumble to the touch. Need to patch the worst of it until spring when it'll be replaced.

Any tips for patches? Lots of roofing cement and felt paper?

You've got the right idea if this is just to be a temporary patch to hold thru the winter, judging from your location, I'd say it's too late this year to replace the whole thing until spring. Here in the midwest metal roofs are really getting popular, might be worth looking into for the replacement in the spring.

Lightbulb roof

If your going to try and slip some new shingles up in there .Could look around for a tile knife ,roof knife Its called by different names.
has a hook on the end goes up under the shingles and you can find the old nail there with it tap down on its handle and it cuts the nail out from under the shingle so you can slide the new shingle in. they work real good for what you want to do. ED
