Leak after snow

I just purchased a home -- after the first snow, as it began to melt, there was a massive amount of water leaking into the room -- actually it was coming down the wall and ceiling and forming a small bubble of water in those areas. After the snow was shoveled off the roof, the leakage basically stopped (although there is damage) This area was fixed a year ago and is under a 5 year guarantee -- what is this likely caused from? Can I wait a week to have the roofer down (provided thre is no snow of course)

Sounds like an Ice Dam: Condition formed at the lower roof edge by the thawing and re-freezing of melted snow on the overhang. Can force water up and under shingles, causing leaks.

It could also be condensation in the attic freezing on the under side of the roof deck then thawing and appearing like a leak.

This link has some good info for you: http://certainteed.com/croof/crct02401p.html

It explains about leak protection, ventilation, and insulation... all of which are causes or cures to winter leaks.

It sounds like you did not have ice and frost installed when your roof was shingled. With ice and frost this would not happen.
