Question Smell in house

I am renting a house. The landlord says I can purchase the house on land contract. My question is:

A couple of years ago they had the roof done because it was leaking. I can see stains on the ceiling tiles. I don't smell it but others who visit do, they say it smells like mold/mildew. How do I go about getting the smell out of the house? It must have gotton the insulation wet inside the walls/ceiling. Is it posssible to get rid of the smell without tearing the house apart???
