need to vent the attic

One part of this house in southwest Florida has a gable roof and the other part has a hip roof. No vents in the roof, but it does have vented soffit all the way around. Looking for suggestions on the best way to vent this attic. Ridge vent, but was told that when it rains real hard down here they will leak. How about turbine or just the simple cans. What do you suggest?

If the gable part has big vents in the ends, it is probably vented OK. Does the hip area have a true attic? If there are vaulted ceilings it is more complicated (turbines and cans won't work). Check for solid, cold blocking between the trusses (rafters). If present, the soffet venting is not working.....you can bore "birdholes" through the cold blocking to allow for venting. In the mountain west, we rarely get leakage through ridge vents. Only when the rain is horizontal in big winds. Low slopes are the worst.

If this attic is open back to the hip.Id cut in button vents on the back side and along the ridge. Turbine vent forget them down here dont last long. Leaks also when it rains hard. If a storm hits you have to take them off. Id also think gable fan on a tstat. it sure helps down here ED
