Question Hip And Ridge Shingle Substitutes?

After three hurricanes I have a roofer ready to replace my shredded roof. Hip and ridge shingles however, are on order with no promise delivery date. The roofer suggests cutting regular shingles to use in place of the manufactures hip and ridge shingles. I am guessing this is a common practice. Any opinion on the pros or cons of using this technique?
Thanks for any advice.
Jim

Common practice.

This is common practice and usually cheaper than using bona-fide ridge and hip caps.

As long as your codes and insurance company do not object to the practice, have at it with no worries.

I'll second that.
I don't know many roofers that actually use the Hip & Ridge.
They all cut the 3-tab shingles.
