metal roof vs asphault shingles

Small vacation house in VT. We want to replace roof and want advice as to whether or not metal roof can go directly over the old shingles (just one layer)and how exatly to do that. It's a simple roof with low pitch. House is only 24 by 30. Can we install by nailing framing over the shingles and attaching metal sheets to wood framing. Also what is best way to cut metal roofing besides tin snips. Thank you for any help

Metal roofs around here are just screwed down over the old shingles (no additional framing), though removing the old shingles would be best. Metal roof are often installed directly over asbestos shingles.

You can get a diamond abrasive or carborundum/grinding type blade for your circular saw. There are also power sheers that nibble their way through the metal removing a 1/8" wide strip of metal as they go.

You can go over a single layer of shingles. Thats up to you. As far as framing it out, you should have an air space inbetween a solid roof and metal roofing. Most garages, saw mills, etc here that use it have slats instead of sheathing under the metal.

Cutting it, there are many choices. You have the large metal snips, abrasive circular saw blades, reciprocating saw, air shears or pray it comes in the exact length you need. Remember to spray paint the cut edge with some good exterior paint. Just remember the cut edgea are a SOB and to handle the metal with gloves.
