Heat Tape

I've got a gutter that gets no sun in the winter. So in a normal Winter, by February it's jammed solid with ice. I've looked (window shopped) at what I think is called 'heat tape' but I'm not thrilled at the looks of it. It's some kind of wired gizzmo that is clipped and tucked in and under the shingles. Portions of it keep the shingle free of ice and portions of it hang in the gutter to keep it free. Is this heat tape and is this my only option (short of filling my gutter with salt) for keeping this gutter open?

Thanks in advance,

Yes, it is you only option. If just clearing a gutter, you will not be attaching it to shingle clips and zig-zagging it. Just run it along the bottom, inside of the gutter and down the downspout a few feet and you are done.
