Measure with tape. Add 5% waste for valleys and 15% waste for hips.

The floor space of your house has no relationship to the number of "squares": needed to roof it...except that the roof is bigger. The roof could be anywhere from 25-50% LARGER than floor space depending on width of overhangs, pitch of roof, number of hips and valleys which increase waste, etc.

After measuring actuall areas, measure linear ft. of hip and ridge caps.

I could try to explain the measuring of triangles and odder "unrectanglular" {not a real word} areas, but I would only confuse.
