building a shed roof

building a shed roof
I'm making a garden office (20'x17'). The foundations are in and the walls are up; I'm now looking to start the roof. I want to put a sloping shed roof on, but now I realise I know *nothing* about roofs.
What stops a shed roof just sliding off?
What size timber etc should I use?
Is there a "how-to" or even a decent diagram out there?
etc...
TIA

Is one exterior wall higher than its opposing wall? If not....may be more trouble than its worth now for a shed roof. Unless you have trusses made.
Size of lumber will depend on the "span". You should always try to "span" the shorter side (17') Dont quote me, but I think your close to maxing out 2x12 lumber capacity, and it could be beyond the reach of a 2x12 depending on your region (Live load/Dead load calc's).
Again, may be simpler to go with a gable ...span is cut in half. Now your only dealing with 8.5' or 10'
Good Luck!
