shingle layers

We need to have new shingles on our roof. How many layers of shingles can a roof have before everything needs to be removed down to the wood? The shingles appear to be in good condition and the roof doesn't leak. It's simply been about 20 years since the roof was reshingled. Thanks

2 max by code in most areas. I wouldn't recommend doing that though, always rip off the old shingles and inspect the sheathing/etc before reinstalling.

Strip your roof down to the roofing boards. It is the correct way to do it.
Shortcuts in roofing bring on big problems later. Sometimes its only a couple of years, then you have to do it all over. Do it right the first time. Good Luck

If your are going to re-roof your house get 30 year roofing they will hold up and last longer and ask for nails no staples even though many would argue about that.
