Skylight caulking

My skylights need caulking between the glass pane and metal flashing and I'm not sure if Butyl rubber caulking can take the place of butyl rubber tape. The caulk is readily available at the local store, but I haven't been able to locate any tape, except online, and will have to cut it down to the proper width.

Any advice on caulking this area would be appreciated. FYI, the lights are about 15-20 years old, Velux ventilating, 22x55 approx, deck mounted with what appears to be a very well designed flashing system that is in very good shape. A little experimentation with the garden house and disassembling the light seems to indicate almost without doubt that leakage is occurring around the window pane and not decking. No leaking occurred when I sprayed any location of the roof's surface around the skylight, but when I hit the glass... Niagara Falls at the bottom of the shaft. Moss and ants will have to find a new habitat.
