roof decking

I have a new home and have discovered that the roof decking in some areas does not butt up to the facia board behind the gutters. There is a one inch gap in some cases. The shingles do extend into the gutters some but this gap worries me since there is no drip edge installed either. Should I try to fill in these gaps with spray foam or some other sealant? I really don't want water and or critters getting into the attic. Thanks for your advise...

The gap doesn't surprise me. It's usually covered by metal flashing and you never see that gap. Spray foam is definately NOT the thing to use, and caulking wouldn't do any good either. The best thing you could do is purchase the correct flashing (gutter apron) and tuck it underneath your shingles. If nothing else, you could buy a roll of tin flashing and only use it where you feel it's needed.

I don't think the drip edge will be wide enough in some cases but I also thought of just using flashing. Thanks for the heads up on the foam.
