Roofing Questions

Hi,

I have 3 questions regarding roofing.

I am planning to re-roof my home and before I start, I want to make sure I have the correct plan.

1. I have an older home and there is not a vent cap (or ridge cap??). I do have an attic fan. should I plan to install a vent cap? I live in NC...not too cold but hot in the summer. What are the pros and cons of installing a vent cap or not installing one?

2. Is it OK to use screws to fasten the shingles on to the roof? Or are nails better? I have seen tutorials that use both.

3. There is a chimney on the house. However, it is no longer used. The oil furnace it once supported is long gone. Is it OK to take out the chimney and fill in the space?

Thanks for any and all assistance,
Mike

1. Unless you have soffit, eave or drip edge venting, a ridge vent will be of no use.

2. Only nails are approved fasteners for shingles.

3. Yes you can remove the chimney just below the roofline if it is an interior chimney. Then seal the hole and shingle over the patch.
