reshingling
I am planning on reroofing my unheated garage.
My plan is to apply the new roof over the existing shingles, which are flat and even.
My question is drip edge. the current roof has bent flashing on the bottom and sides.
Since the old flashing is uneven, i thought i could nail this tight and then apply new drip edge.
If i apply new drip edge would i apply it over the existing shingles?
thanks

Since you mention unheated garage I assume you are in cold country. ( Here in Phoenix we would say uncooled garage). Since the existing metal may be acting as an ice sheild, I would try to kleave it on. Cut back the old shingles flush with the roof edge so there is no shingle overhang. Install a premade D style metal edging if you can find it at a local supply house. Put this on top of the old shingles to hide them and give a clean look to the edge.

As Hooter mentioned it wil look best to cut the original shingle overhang and install a drip edge over the old drip edge. Make sure you measure the existing drip edge to make sure the new drip edge will work with it. For example if the old drip edge is long and sticks out farther than the new stuff it will not look right. In worse case senarior you may have to remove the orginal drip edge and cut back the shingles to be flush with the end boards.

the old drip edge is just bent flashing about 3" - 3 1/2" long.
it's wavy and uneven and hangs away from the wood trim. i think i will cut the vertical portion, trim back the shingles and then put the new drip edge tight against the vertical surface.
thanks for your help.
