Question patio roof questions

Ive torn the roof(plywood,4x8 insulating sheets, and aluminum sheets with tar) off of my back patio to repair rotting wood & leaking problem. Whats the simplest way to re-roof and waterproof.I dont really want to use tar again..its fugly and to messy for my taste. The patio is roughly 16x16.
Thanx in advance

What sort of roof does your house have? Do you want the patio to match the house? You have lots of options that are DIYer friendly. Shingles, rolled roofing, metal roofing, tile, fiberglass, slate, fake slate and probably a half dozen more that I'm not familiar with.

A lot depends on the style and pitch of the roof i.e. shingles don't work well on a flat roof, your skill level and how much you want to spend.

patio roof

Sorry I wasnt real specific. Its an add-on patio that attaches to the house. Its got probably a 3degree pitch outward away from the house. It had some fiberboard looking insulation on top of the plywood(was wondering if I even need that again),then the aluminum with tar on top,Added on before we bought the house, probably in the early eighties.
I just want to put a simple, good, roof on so we can use it in all weather. It will be screened, and have a light plywood ceiling with a fan.
Thanx
