Maybe the third time will be a charm. Says I am logged in, but....I must be doing something wrong. I will try to post again.
Why is it some people start shingling a hip roof in the middle? JUst a way some do it?

3 posts for the price of one.
The reason some people start shingling a hip roof in the middle is because they are running their 3 tab shingles perfectly perpendicular to the roof edge. With 3 tabs, it's important to keep the tabs all lined up in a row, or it looks like a crew of hobos worked on the roof (sloppy). The idea is that if you start in the middle, you should not have gotten too far off by the time you run the shingles out to the ends of the roof.

Kind of what I was thinking, but I was thinking laminated shingles also run perpendicular. So it is just a matter of getting the lines marked right. Looks like starting in the middle would also lessen the chance of getting them out of kelter. Do people that use layout tape also start in the middle on hip roofs?
Thanks for the reply.

When I run three tabs on a hip roof I chaulk the two vertical lines towards the middle so I only have to run lines up the roof once.
I've never "racked" laminate shingles and never will. With laminate shingles or full tab shingles all are started either in a valley or from the left side of the roof (right handed).
When running laminate shingles snapping lines across the roof is not needed.
