nailing shingles

Hi Guys,

First time shingling here and just wanted to clarify...

Using 3 tab asphalt shingles. Do I nail directly above the 3 tabs and below the tar line? Or would I nail above the 3 tabs and above the tar line.

Nailing above the tar line would make more sense to me, but all the instructions are saying to nail just above the 3 tabs and before the tar line...just wanted to clarify that I was reading the bundle instructions right.

Thanks alot guys!

Read the wrapper.
Follow the nailing instructions that are there.

Different manufacturers have different recommendations.

Nailing below the tar line is all I've ever seen recommended. Additionally, in some situations, they recommend using 6 nails per shingle, using pairs of nails to the right and left of every tab slot. If you have a steep slope or low slope, consult the instructions regarding the need for additional sealant.

ended up nailing them as per the instructions...between the tabs and the tar line.

thanks again!
