Facia Installation

I have a house from the 50's that does not have a facia/soffit. Gutters are hung directly on the rafters. I am going to install new gutters, and want to install a facia board to update the appearance of the house while I am at it.

I am thinking I will use 1x8 cedar boards attached to the rafters. Is there a better material to use for this application?

I will likely install a soffit as well, a couple years down the road when I install new siding on the house.

Thanks.

Some places sell fingerjointed fascia, which is milled smooth on all 4 sides and is free of knots. Cedar 1x8 would work, it just depends on how nice you want it to be and how much you want to spend. Standard pine 1x8's would work, but if you use them it would be a good idea to prime and paint all 4 sides. Of course that's a good idea no matter what you install.

If you really want to put up something nice, use cedar 2x8 or one of the new Azek or Miritec trim boards.
