Unhappy Leaking screen porch roof

My screened roof has been patched along the seams and where the roof meets the roof on the house and now needs to be redone. It's impossible to take off the old patch so can I just tape over it and seal the roof with some type of patch? What is the best way to go about this and what should I use?

Water follows the path of least resistance. If water has found a path beneath old flashing over which has been patched, there are chances that adding more patch will not resolve the leak problem. To eliminate the leak, the flashing should be replaced.

Perhaps it is possible to install step flashing over old. This would need to extend 4 inches out on roof and up 2-4 inches behind siding, trim, or whatever it abutts. Step flashing interlaces with shingles where they meet a wall or other vertical surface. It is installed using dabs of asphalt flashing cement under and over it.
