Re-Shingled roof/vent and silicone on nails

I had my roof re-shingled(old layer torn off) and they put on new vents also. They have exposed nail heads on the vent and roof caps(or whatever you call them) that they used silicone (or similar) to cover the nail heads.

Is this a common practice?

Won't the silicone weather after so many years?

Here's a couple of pictures: http://home-and-garden.webshots.com/album/555372335jOSZrS

Wink

Looks like a neat job on the vents . We use roof cement all the time. You could get a tube of it and just go over the nail heads.

I agree looks good .. Nothing out of place here.

The end caps must be face nailed. There is no way around it
( roof cement is the better choice to cover nail heads ).

The bottom of the vent flashing could have been cemented down with common roof cement though normally they are nailed.

Thanks for your input guys... I was a little concerned about the nails.

Do you have any recommendation for a certain brand of roof cement?

What temps can it be applied? The highs lately are low 40's and it won't be getting any warmer.

Just go to your local building supply store. They do have a winter grade roof cement but for such a small area the regular grade will be fine. keep it in your house/warm environment and not outside before use.

Good luck,
Steven
