leaking roof vent in attic

I have a small leak around the exhaust vent that runs from the crawlspace below the house up through the attic ceiling. I have access from the interior of the attic to place some roof sealant where the leak is. Would this hold up? do I have to go onto the roof and seal around the exterior of the vent?

yes

I think you already know that, but I'll reiterate. Caulking on the bottom might make it worse and really destroy your roof deck. Got to eliminate the leak from the top. What type of flashing is on this vent?

Yeah, I knew it. Makes sense that it would just create more problems above (hadn't considered this).

This is an older home, I don't recall seeing any flashing (should it be visible?). None of the vents have the rubber gasket that you see with newer construction either.
