Metal roof painting options ?

We have a metal roof ,older maybe 80's but in good condition ,a few rust areas ,nothing deep, all surface ,
how and what would one use (type of paint ) name brand (available to Canada)
Ive seen a silver metallic paint used on old metal siding ,but silver is a little flashy
Paint would preferable need to cover rust ,or at least discourage it

Thank you

Wink

Id say check with and trailer supply company or some that sell the trailers. What you want is what they use all the time on the metal roofs of the trailers. Home Depot here has a coat for the roof that is used on tile roof. It is a heavy base paint.

You have several choices, 2 of which require priming. Most use fibered asphalt aluminum coating, often called by the brand name 'koolseal' I prefer the brand lowes carries - silver dollar. You can also use regular aluminum paint but all rust must be primed with a solvent based primer first or it will burn thru the paint in short order.

You can also paint the roof an infinite number of colors. It helps to have the primer tinted so the top coat will cover better. Use a good quality exterior oil base paint.

Wire brushing or sanding rusty areas will help keep the rust from coming back better than just painting over them. You will find better paint [and advice] at a paint store [not dept] Quality paint will be more resistant against fading in the sun.
