Attic Popping - What is it?

My 4 year old house has been making very odd noises, like a popping sound or loud banging sound in the attic. Only makes this noise in the evening.
Not a sound an animal would make, or anything like it, but sounds like the wood or something is moving..? Sounds like what would be the sound when you hit a large/heavy hammer on a piece of wood or something.
I looked up into the attic and did not see anything that would make this noise.
Does not do this during the day and does it in both section of my attics, one going lentghwise of the house and the other way with the upper section were the bedrooms are. Both attics are not accessible to each other ( tri level split )
Thinking it may be settling, but 4 years old and never did this before.
I am in Ohio and we have had some very unsual low temps lately with allot of snow, but looking at the roof from outside I see no problems.
Does it only in the evening and every 5 to 10 minutes in a different area, never the same popping pitch or same spot.
Any ideas?
Appreciate any help!
Thank you!

It could be your vinyl siding popping- maybe on an attic gable end- on its fasteners as it expands and contracts (typically happens in the morning when the sun shines on it, and in evening after direct sunlight fades.)

It could very well be that the vinyl siding is causing the snap, crackle and pop. My house and others do this. I don't have vinyl siding. I have concluded the noise is coming from the expansion and contraction of stressed and warped wooden rafters, beams, joists, attic planking etc. It usually happens in the evening during the summer when the attic begins to cool down. Of course it could be ghosts. Nah! I'm going with the expansion and contraction of wood up there. At one time I became so concerned and curious about the noise that I went up my folding ladder into the crawl space and sat there quietly and listened for awhile. I could hear the occassional pop and it I'm sure it was coming from the rafters, etc.

Hope this helps.

Thanks everyone.

We usually do not have 5 degree temps here for days in a row like we have.

It's now 20 and no popping tonight.

Isnt it odd to pop only when its 5 or below?

Guess I was overly concerned that something was wrong.

Appreciate the help.
