shake shingles

A friend of mine had a roofer come out to estimate replacing some missing and bowed shingles. He told her he would have to replace the ridge-cap with 8" spacing because it was done incorrectly with 12" spacing. Can you explain exactly what the "spacing" is/means? And is he correct that it really needs to be replaced?

The ridge cap shingles need to be installed with proper exposure. That means they need to overlap so only part of the shingle is exposed from underneath the next shingle. With regular 3-tab shingles, they are laid down every 5 inches. This results in a 5-inch exposure. I'm not familiar with ridge cap shingles that use an 8-inch or 12-inch spacing.
