Question Repairing roof gutters

One 'outside' corner and one 'inside' corner of my roof gutter is leaking. I know I have to re-calk those seams. The instructions I have say to remove the old calk. I have scraped, dug, wire brushed and pealed as much of the old calk out as I can. It is really stuck between the overlapping edges of the gutter sections and my efforts are beginning to cause dents and gouges in the metal.

Do I have to get ALL of it out?

Is there any kind of solvent I can use that will be less damaging to the metal?

Will all my efforts be wasted if I don't get all of the old calk out?
