Slate Roof ??'s

I have a slate roof. The slates are approx. 9in long by 7in. deep and about 3/8s thick.
My questions are how do these stay in place?? How hard would it be to replace the ones that are damaged due to wind and debris?? Is this something a little better than novice DIY'er can do?? I do have a rather steep pitch to the roof, but I could not tell you the pitch rate.

Slate is readily available in this area so getting more won't be a problem.

Thanks,

Slate roof repair:

That said, I would hire a roofer familiar with slate roofs - it's difficult to work on one without creating more damage than you repair unless you know exactly what you are doing.

Great Info! Thanks
I was kind of thinking that this may not be a DIY project.
Now I know why I have rough hewn logs for rafters!
