concrete asbestos shingles

Can I remove them myself? Is it safe? How would one dispose of them? Does a roofer have to be "certified" to remove and dispose of them. I am sure I can reroof my house, but a big deal was made of our shingles when we bought the house. We got one estimate for $6K, but I laughed that away! I have read they really are not a health risk unless I smash them into powder and continuously breath the dust. Any help is greatly appreciated.

You'll have to check your local laws. Here a homeowner can remove them but you have to dispose of them properly which simply involves taking them to a dump that has an area dedicated to asbestos.

Unless you plan to saw them up you should be just fine.

In Va, they have dsposal rules that need following. But, call around to some of the dumpster companies. One or more will be able to comply with the rules and supply you a dumpster for the purpose.

Don't try disposing of them yourself without some WRITTEN permit from your city, county, or state agency.
