Question Re-Roofing or not ?

40 yr. old two story on L.I. NY with 2 layers of 3 tab. no leaks, Roofer wants to go down to rafters & replace 3/8 sheathing with 1/2 in. then install 30yr. arch. Is it necessary to strip plywood? he claims splintering etc. from removing nails would weaken old deck, could not support new roof??

Stripping off two layers can't be done cleanly. There will be the beat up ply underneath still riddled with nails, and yes all this levering and prying is going to weaken the already weak 3/8.

Better pay hours putting up new than further punishing a substandard sheathing.

Roof

3/8 sheathing is thin. If that is really what you have, then have it replaced with 1/2 in. or 5/8 in..
