Removing a Skylight

Have a manufactured / mobile home with a skylight that has been the bane of my existence, after numerous 'quick repairs' (yes, I know should have done more thorough job) and grief from the wife, I have decided to remove it completely and seal over the hole, adding recessed lighting in to win points with her...

However, looking for hints, tips and tricks, and just plain old good advice on removing the dang thing and repairing the roof.

The removal should be relatively simple, from what I've read you should clear a patch of shingles around it, theoretically it should come up easy enough... I even understand something of laying a waterproof membrane and re-shingling over the area...

My main concern is how to repair/close the hole? I'm guessing plywood, but how to attach it so that the hole becomes strong enough I don't have to remember for the rest of my life not to step on that spot... Overlapping the plywood? But that would cause a high spot/ridge along the top of the panel...

Any helpful hints gratefully accepted!!

Thanks!

You need to cut it out on the centerline of the trusses. If the hole is wider than 16", you need to add framing through the center of the hole to support the plywood.
